6 Fall Event Safety Tips for Parents

Moderate temperatures make fall the ideal time for fun events that bring communities together. From fairs and parties, to harvest festivals and Halloween activities, there are so many traditions that people all over the country look forward to each autumn. While these events offer plenty of fun, they also come with real safety risks, too. Make sure you and your family have easy and enjoyable fall celebrations by following these tips.
- Get information ahead of time.
Many neighborhoods host multiple events celebrating fall all season long. Dates and times vary by community, so be sure you know the specific information and rules for each event.
- Travel in groups.
When it comes to safety, there is strength in numbers, so it’s best to attend festivities with a group. Experts recommend that children under 12 be accompanied by an adult, and that older children spend their evening with multiple friends and have a preset plan.
- Dress to stand out.
If costumes are involved, opt for bright, colorful costumes that are easily seen by motorists and other people. For extra safety, use reflective tape on clothing and props to help your child stand out in the dark.
- Only visit participating homes.
If the event is in your neighborhood, remind your children to only approach participating homes. Play it safe by only visiting homes that have lights on, plenty of decorations or people sitting outside. Additionally, never enter a stranger’s home or car, even if invited.
- Check the candy.
If your child receives treats and candy, make sure to inspect it when he or she gets home. Look for tears in packaging and be cautious of unwrapped goods. And, if your child has an allergy, discard any treats that could be harmful.
- Drive safely.
